So it just so happens that I got dragged into seeing this at the cinema.
I have no complaints. It was a very enjoyable movie. Funny. Intriguing. Captivating. Unique.
I was quite surprised by the ending - I had anticipated a completely different ending altogether.
In fact, I was quite surprised, and impressed, by the entire movie. I was lucky to be dragged to this, because I would not have otherwise gone to see it. I think the movie could use a better trailer - it seemed like it only used footage from the first 20 minutes, hardly capturing how the remainder of the movie played out.
The way the opening credits portion was shot, a style they used at least once, maybe twice, in the film, was stylistically fascinating. I cannot think of another movie that has used such a technique. Very, very cool.
If you cannot catch this at the cinema, I highly recommend this as a rental.
BUT I have decided that I'm no longer gonna go to the cinema if I can avoid it. It's just getting too expensive. I hate getting ripped off, and last night the entrance fee plus one small drink (between two) for me and the missus was over £20. Robbing bastards!
Great idea, Bradley Cooper gives a very good performance and the movie makes pretty good use of DeNiro. The visual style is fairly unique, but I was kind of expecting this from the guy who did The Illusionist w/ Ed Norton a few years back.
The biggest problem I had with it was the script - he goes from writer to Wall Street tycoon pretty abruptly and the movie gives into a fairly by the numbers thriller that doesn't really go anywhere. Oh, and just because he watched a few Bruce Lee movies doesn't necessarily mean that you've learned Jeet Kun Do - you've learned chereographed martial arts which would amount to something like really aggressive ballroom dancing. Like I said, it's a solid idea, but they don't run with the idea and instead go for a much more routine movie when they could have had something really unique.
Greg: why not smuggle in the goods? the food/drink prices at the cinema are unconscionable. have your lady bring a big purse
also, the tickets we had were apparently purchased at a AAA branch. They were, if I recall correctly, $6.50 each (instead of the $9.50 the cinema was charging at the door). Not sure if you have one near you, but I'd recommend checking into it if you do.
Highsteppa: agreed. I understand your thoughts on the fly-by-night numbers mastery - I too think it would have been great to explore that more. As for Bruce Lee, I took that scene to imply that he could recognize patterns in movement (like numbers) and react to them according to what he had seen on tv, which is, I think, how Lee developed JKD into a martial art that addressed the wide range of martial arts patterns from a variety of different styles and form it into a singular martial art to respond to those (as opposed to practicing only one martial art that may suffer disadvantages when squared off against another martial artist of a different style).
I think this movie could be spun into a tv series. It would definitely allow the director and writers to explore many different themes and contexts.
Quite enjoyed this, liked the way it was shot, agree he became a wall street tycoon quite abruptly, and didn't like the ending. Movie felt like it was missing something.

Oh. My. God. James absolutely obliterated the island tonight. The last time there was so much destruction, Obi Wan Kenobi had to take a seat on the Falcon after the Death Star said "hi and bye" to Leia's homeworld.
I got pics and video. But I will upload them in the morning. I need to smoke this nice phat joint and just close my eyes and replay the amazingness in my head.
