Atkinson survives snow taster
New Subaru recruit Chris Atkinson has said he's happy with his first taste of snow driving after testing the Impreza WRC in which he will make his debut at the World Rally Championship's top level on this weekend's Uddeholm Swedish Rally. The Australian, indicated, however that he still has lots to learn about one of rallying's toughest skills.
Atkinson has previously attended a winter test in Lapland with Subaru, has shaken down one of its cars at the MIRA proving ground in the UK and gained experience on snow driving technique at four-times world champion Tommi Makinen's school, but this is the first time that Atkinson has driven a full-blown World Rally Car on one of the sport's trickiest surfaces.
"It was an awesome day," he said. "It was good to finally be able to get out into the forest and test the car at speed. With each run I completed, I began to feel more comfortable in the car and have more confidence to push harder. One thing that I've learnt is that you need to have the confidence in your driving to make them react correctly. If you're too cautious, the car doesn't always respond the way it should."
