^Hey, dude, saw Criterion's release of 8-1/2 recently on Blu-ray. I fell asleep halfway through but I was tired to begin with to be fair...I need to see it again because my attention was piqued again by the end of the film. Just thought I'd mention that since I have your attention. ;-) When Criterion isn't pushing soft/hardcore porn as art, they're very good. ;-)

Both La Dolce Vita and 8-1/2 (in the crispy clean Criterion remaster) need acertain degree of perseverance (not a "Dogville"-type of strength of will, but still). 8-1/2 is visionary, and then some, a movie in a movie, life and art imitating each other and THAT final sequence with Rota's score. So it's often quoted as one of the best movies of all time.
La Dolce Vita is apparently less monumental and even more self-indulging, but it's the one that I prefer at this point of my life.
I also love the Neo-Realistic FF, "Il Bidone" and the great "Cabiria's Nights" (also on Criterion).

My fave director of these past few years, Wong Kar Wai, with I'm In The Mood For Love and the incredible sequel 2046 made relive those golden days of European cinema.

Cool...it was a Netflix rental. The film within a film autobiographical aspect made it even more intriguing. I may have to add it to my wishlist for the next sale. I need to nab La Dolce Vita. Is that also Italian cinema?
