Music News Romania Interview :
1. Hello John Digweed! Thank you for being so kind to accept our invitation for an interview. How are you? How does look this year for you so far?
So far so good! Lots of great gigs and now the Ibiza and festival season is starting I’m excited about starting to play some outdoor gigs.
2. You are for a very long time in the music industry and you still hold the leading position. How have you survived over time?
I think it is because I always try to stay upfront with my music and be consistent with my DJ`ing.
3. How would you describe your DJ sets? What are the styles you mix most often?
I try and play from deep house to techno and everything in between.
4. I know that your label, Bedrock Records will release in June a great compilation: Structures Two, a 3xCD collection. What can you tell us about this release?
CD1 showcases exclusive remixed versions from the Bedrock catalogue in ablissed out electronica mix. CD2 is a live mix, capturing the energy at one of USA’s finest clubs, Avalon, Los Angeles. CD3 features exclusive, full-length, DJ-friendly club tracks that showcase the sound of Bedrock in 2011.
5. Have you a favourite track from this compilation?
I like them all so its too hard to choose!
6. If you were to pick some DJs who have had some brilliant performances in the past year, which ones would you choose?
Josh Wink and Guy J.
7. What about young electronic music talent? Who do you think will rise up this year?
I think Guy J will continue to rise up. He is such a talent.
8. Which was the best event that you have played?
Big Beach Boutique in Brighton to over 250,000 people.
9. Which was the most strange or unusual place you’ve ever played?
Big Beach Boutique in Brighton to over 250,000 people I don`t think I will ever do another gig like that.
10. What equipment do you use? What do you prefer for mixing: Laptop / CDJ’s? Why?
I use CDJ 2000`s with Allen & Heath mixer and Pioneer EFX 1000. This format works great for me and I am happy with this set up.
11. What is your favorite piece of equipment / gadget?
My laptop for staying in touch and doing edits while I’m travelling.
12. Your favorite producer at the moment?
Carl Craig is always making great tracks and remixes.
13. Please recommend some ‘must listen’ tracks to our readers?
Guy J – 1000 Words – the whole album is amazing!
14. Do you regret any decision made during your career? If you could to give back the time, how would you change things?
I regret nothing. You have to learn from things in life.
15. Why do you think so many teenagers nowadays want to become a DJ ?
Well, they see DJ`s on a stage with 1000`s of people going crazy to them and they like that idea.
16. What do you think about the Romanian musical scene?
I love playing in Romania, the crowd are always to responsive and love to party. There is also lots of great music coming out of Romania.
17. What can we expect from you in the near future?
For the next few months I will be touring around the world promoting my new ‘Structures Two’ album on Bedrock.
18. Do you have a message for the Romanian people?
Thank you very much for all the support over the years and see you soon!sigpicSimonR

The Nightlife 5: John Digweed
by Marcos Colón
05.17.2011
One of the toughest things to do in any music genre is reach legendary status. In order for an artist to reach legendary status in dance music, a few things have to happen. First of all, their career has to go beyond the 15-year mark (doesn't sound like that long, but in dance music it's an accomplishment if you're still producing hits after three years). Second of all, you still need to be actively touring, "living legend" always sounds better. And lastly, they need to have their own label. Not to say that this is the end all be all list, but they're certainly three aspects that every legendary DJ-producer has checked off. One man that certainly falls into this category is British DJ-producer, John Digweed. First breaking out onto the scene in the early 90s with his partner in crime, Sasha, now, his career is nearly two decades old, but he's still one of the most popular names in dance music. Next month he'll be releasing the three-disc Structures album, but he's currently busy on a North American tour that lasts until this September.
We recently caught up with Digweed to see what restaurant he wishes he could take on the road with him, what's changed most about club culture, and what his favorite clubs are to play in the U.S.
Clubplanet: After hours of DJing, sometimes it may be best to get away from the studio monitors. Where does a world-renown DJ like to grab a drink on a night off?
John Digweed: To be honest a great way for me to relax is to go mountain-bike riding in the local woods. It really clears my head.
Clubplanet: You've always been an artist that's in high-demand, meaning the traveling can get pretty extensive. If there was one restaurant you could take with you on the road, which would that be?
John Digweed: I love sushi, so a Nobu bento box would be great every day.
Clubplanet: We're sure you've seen the rise and fall of many trends in the club. What aspect in club culture do you think has changed the most since the start of your career?
John Digweed: The sound systems, lights, and visual aspect of clubs have improved loads over the years. But the thing that make a great club are a friendly staff and a great crowd. Without these it will never last.
Clubplanet: You've played some of the biggest clubs in the world. If there's one venue that just feels like home every time you play it, where is it and why?
John Digweed: Twilo was always amazing. Nowadays, Fabric in London, Avalon LA, and The Vagabond in Miami all attract a proper party crowd who come to dance.
Clubplanet: You had a big hand in the development of The Vagabond in Miami, one of the city's most beloved nightlife venues. When it comes to that particular venue, what aspect of your personality is represented well there?
John Digweed: The reason The Vagabond is so successful is down to Carmel [Ophir], Rodney [Mayo], and all the staff 's hard work week in and week out. The club offers something different from the normal clubs that are out there and I wish that I lived a lot closer as the vibe in that venue is very special.sigpicSimonR
