The standard of living declines withing the community surrounding the store. It's not my study, it was performed by a group of professionals. Their theory was that in a way it became a self-fulfilling prophecy due to the fact that consumers, for the most part, want low prices. In order to obtain low prices you have to keep your overheard low, which includes the cost of labor. By and large, the people that are willing to work for the wages Wal-Mart is willing to pay (for support services) are people that lack education, single mothers, and people who need it as a 2nd or 3rd job. A FT job at Wal-Mart alone would hardly put you above the poverty line in the United States.

This contributes to the deterioration of the community around the Wal-Mart which ultimately pushes the 'good' of the community further away and invites even more 'low class' in.

Trader Joe's is the biz! Everything from the Palak Paneer, the fish, and let's not forget the Tiramisu ice cream!!! I don't shop anywhere else (it's only a 3 minute walk from my apt), unless I need specialty items or cheap fruit. Why more people don't shop there I'll never know. Cheaper prices all around. Back in Indiana (I'm now in the Philly area), there was no tax added to the bill. What you saw is what you paid. Can anybody confirm this from other states?

burnt out on the Joes a few years back. We have had a few many here in ore-y-gun. Great store and great prices. My new current fav is Whole Foods. I love paying three times the amount for organic, plus when you leave they stick a fucking pole in your ass. Great service. I will be back soon, I am sure.

That's debatable. I enjoy going there but I'm lucky enough to have them, Whole Foods Market, Tom's Farms, Henry's and a few others that offer a variety of awesome products.

There was an interesting study that I recently read that talked about how the standard-of-living in a community declines as soon as a Wal-Mart opens in that community.

That is why many communities tried to keep Wal*Mart from coming into Orange County. For years they succeeded but Wal*Mart kept putting up a fight until they finally got in. But... at least... the Supercenters aren't allowed in this county. We got a semi-win there.
