Its got to be The Great Escape, What a cast. Others include Guns Of Navarone, The Longest Day, Private Ryan and Where Eagles Dare, "Broadsword calling Danny Boy".

I don't know if it's my favorite, or the "best", but I saw "We Were Soldiers" recently; I then bought the DVD. Affected me very deeply in its portrayal of both the American AND the NVA soldiers in the Vietnam War. If solely based on its combat sequences, I feel it should have done for Vietnam what Saving Private Ryan did for WWII.

Realistic is a hard word to define, but my favourite war movies include:

Platoon, Full Metal Jacket, Apocalypse Now, Hamburger Hill (the Vietnam era of war movies were particularly good I thought, very much focused on the human side of things), The Thin Red Line, The Longest Day, Saving Private Ryan, Band Of Brothers, All Quiet On The Western Front, The Great Escape, Schindlers List, To End All Wars, and probably the greatest of them all, Catch-22.
