i know most of the readers here are adults who grew up with this site for the past 15 years and don't feel the need to download music from youtube anymore, but still there are channels like dj mag in the lab, boiler room, and some others that only release their sets on youtube as video, so this is a good way to download those sets...

yeah, it's true, youtube music quality sucks, but sometimes you just need to download this song as mp3 (or mp4 video file) from youtube directly to your mobile, and then the best choice imho is an online youtube to mp3 converter like this one .. no extra downloads to install software or app, just a few redirects during use, but where will you go without them these days..

The problem with converting is that it makes the (already lossy) quality worse and there's no need to convert. youtube-dl lets you download the m4a, webm or mp4 file. The best quality sound is usually in the m4a or webm (opus) file.

I don't think the music quality on Youtube is always crap, I mean listen to this, does it sound bad?

Maybe not CD quality, but it sounds alright to me.

Should be possible with youtube-dl
It's a simple command line program, I hope you're familiar with that.

youtube-dl -F https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Qi-e0dKczJc
shows available formats,

youtube-dl -f 137 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Qi-e0dKczJc
downloads the best quality video file.

The quality on youtube hasn't always been the same. There was a period the audio quality was 192! kb/s (2014 or so) most people cannot distinguish that from a lossless source such as CD. Now it's 128kb/s (m4a) and ~130kb/s (webm), so the bitrate went down. But the quality of the encoders also got better in the last 8 years. And of course the "youtube quality" can never be better than what was uploaded. I think it's safe to say that the quality of the uploads ranges from very bad to very good what makes it impossible to define youtube quality.

What those YOUTUBE TO MP3 converter-sites do is they take the 128 kb/s m4a file and convert that to an MP3 file. No matter if you can hear it or not: the quality is going to be worse. That's why I like youtube-dl so much. It does not convert, it downloads.
