well unfortunately most americans don't realize that there is a whole world of music outside of mtv too. Ignorance does run rampant. It might just have been someone from a small city that asked your friend that. I have no clue and i'm not going to try to back up what that person said...it's just utter stupidity to think that people from the UK speak another language.
