oh right.....i completely missed the point here then. I like the breakdowns, give youtime for a swig of water and the the bit where the beats kick back in is always a great moment as it gives themmore emphasis
in a two hour set 3 breaks is good ( reminds me to go bar three times so mouth don't feel like i been blowing the sandman ) what i'm getting at is going to a prog club and having ure night fucked up by some git doing it b4 every track

a good dj should know his vinyls and know how to work up the beats smoothly .. just knocking the beats off in order to change is either poor craftsmanship or not the reason he's doing it ..

House or prog or what ever genre of dance music that has a straight 4/4 beat is basically the only type of music that has a beat like that.
Rock, hip hop, disco, metal, pop, country, blah blah blah, all have a form of broken beat. So why is it suddenly boring to hear a broken beat in a dance set?
when you go to a rock concert, or rap show (first off you suck and have a horrid taste in music) but secondly those events are just that, shows or concerts. i mean if you go to a big concert, you have an assigned fucking seat. holy shit - middle school flashback. you dont really have the option of dancing around. you just sit and watch and sing along. fucking sheep. and rap concerts, you don't even know what the hell is going on half the time because theres more people on stage then off. the music always sounds horrid because they arn't in a studio, and how the hell would you dance to an eminem track anyways? is there anything more funny then white people trying to get involved in hip hop?
edm is "party" oriented. it's dance music, the whole point (for most genres) is to make people move. one of the reasons i personally got into the music, was the 4/4. it was another fasset that seperated edm from the rest of the garbage out there. breaks can be used very effectively, but in moderation. in no way do i want to go see a pure breaks dj. ever.
one thing i do not understand is a guy who purely plays prog breaks, with the melodies being on the lighter side, and the lack of a hard constant beat, who the hell is going to move? (i.e chable remixes - you can say whatever you want about how well they are produced- it's not going to rock out the worlds best dancefloors) i saw jimmy van m a couple years ago, and his records went somewhere else besides detroit, so all he had were his cd-rs. he played primarily breaks, while some tracks were cool, after 3-4 in a row everybody was just standing around or leaving. they lack energy and a vibe thats appropriate for a club atmosphere. leave the breaks for the rap thugs and d'n'b/ jungle crowds.
i guess what im trying to say is that breaks (prog inperticular) are ok maybe for home listening or chillout sessions, but if your trying to shake it, it just aint gonna happen.
