I'm not excited about it because I think it is fundamentally at odds with what we're supposed to be about, but I'd be OK with something like "profiling plus," i.e., fitting a certain profile plus some other factor suggesting someone was up to no good. It wouldn't have to be something that would rise to the level of probable cause for a search on its own, but something more than "let's stop this brown-skinned 28 year old guy."

To the extent that you'd have to be an idiot to fail to recognize that the vast majority of terrorists are 18-30 yr old males of mideastern descent, I think some intelligent profiling is probably appropriate. That doesn't mean that the police should ignore everyone else, nor does it mean that every person fitting that mold ought to be shadowed by the police -- I just mean that it is absurd to rely upon random searches that are unlikely to have anything other than a mild deterrent effect.

I do go back and forth on this, though, because I have such a serious problem with the idea of allowing the police to stop every Arab for nothing more than the way they look. It is just so averse to my worldview. Ideally, I would just like for police to have the option of searching with criteria in mind rather than pulling people at random. The problem is that any time you add that human element into it where there is room for discretion, it is subject to abuse, and you can be sure that there will be horror stories of discrimination and prejudice that arise from it...

its only a tough issue if you let the ACLU bullshit take control of facts.

im all for rights and liberties, but any steps taken to prevent a bomb from going off in penn station at 8AM is ok in my book. like i said, they need to make it so you cannot be prosecuted for another crime if they search you. (i.e. open alchohol container, weed, bootlegs, etc)

I'm still not for this but at least I agree with what you said above. If it is going to be done at least let's not put guys away for other things found. I do fear though that we will end up with a society of 2nd class citizens. If your white no problem go on, fit the profile and you'll be searched at every stop. I'd be even more worried that you would convert these people to terrorists eventually. Call someone a thief long enough and they'll become one. Treat these guys like terrorists long enough...

It would be interesting though if they applied this to other areas. For instance, child molesters tend to be white males. Would it be ok to search guys who fit the profile for child porn, to "protect the children"?

Anyways on a sidenote, not really related to terrorist activities, just amusing to me:

Police: Woman tries to open door during flight

SEATTLE, Washington (AP) -- A woman was arrested Wednesday for attempting to open an airplane exit door while the plane was still in the air, police said.

The 52-year-old woman from Dania Beach, Florida, left her seat and tried to open the door as the United Airlines flight was descending into Seattle to land, police said. The plane was at an altitude of about 4,000 feet at the time.

She failed but "did manage to turn the handle far enough that a warning light went on in the cockpit," Seattle-Tacoma International Airport spokesman Bob Parker told KING-TV.

A flight attendant persuaded the woman to sit back down, but nobody physically restrained her. Parker said the other passengers stayed belted in their seats in case she did manage to open the door.

The woman was arrested for investigation of malicious mischief when the plane landed. Police were investigating whether alcohol and prescription medication were involved.

A United spokesman did not immediately return a call for comment late Wednesday.

^^^ There is a difference between profiling and racial profiling. Racial profiling says check them because they are of a certian race or look (brown skin, middle eastern). Profiling for a terrorist says if they are carrying huge backpacks, wearing big coats in 80 degree weather and look nervous, you might want to have a look at em.

i agree the point is not far. but you have to look at that other way as well. this is a big loop in the system. Frankly to judge or "determine" who is "dangerous" is pathetic. frankly you might as well check every mother fucker. black, yellow, red, european white, pink and blue.

something similar has been said in england after the london bombings ..
police are allowed to stop and search in england ( don't know if they can in the states) without probable cause . and leftwing assholes have started saying u can't target a specific profile cos that would b racist ect.ect. but the bombers blewup muslims too in those attacks just like alot of innocent muslims died in 9/11 in the towers . is it better to safeguard political correctness or lives ????? police want to protect everyone from bombers not just whites

dude, they arent segregating anyone. they are asking us to be willing to bear with the fact that certain circles are trying to kill innocents and they are trying to prevent it.
