actually Tiddles, when something belongs to someone it is correct to place an apostrophe before the "s". Although this rule in the English language has always been a subject of confusion, and you interpretation is wholly valid.

This does not apply to the word "it".

If you are talking about one ball then say
"The ball's colour is red"
or
"Its colour is red".

If you are talking about more than one ball say
"The balls' colours are red"
or
"Their colour is red"






unless it's blue of course.
