the jury who decided that life imprisonment was an appropriate sentence can't be commended highly enough. nobody in the UK predicted that. although one isolated case will not really alter many people's attitudes towards american society and its government - it was certainly refreshing.

so looking forward to some interesting debate with the good folk on this American-centric board (that i love so much), i come to find it shot to shit with ridiculous posts and general garbage. what happened here in the space of a few days?

personally i think life in prison is way worse for moussai (sp?) if we put him to death then he becomes a matyr, and we already have enough matrys. i would like to get those 70 or so virgins they promise though.

yes I agree. life imprisonment is definitely far worse. but in so many states it is not seen as the highest form of punishment.

we don't have to talk about martyrdom. we have already lost so much human life over the last 10 years through this global war.

i dream of a day when the death penalty is abolished in the world's most powerful country - as long as life means life.

I find that nearly condescending. We condemn them for killing and then we kill them ? How would the civilized Western World be ANY different from the barbaric terrorists if they were executed..... especially on US Soil.

Being killed on the battle field would be another thing all together but I do agree, prison would be one hell of a way for this dude to repent. I still shudder from that MTV show where they showed young kids conversing with hardened criminals in Jail.

Actually, it costs tax payers more money to sentence someone to death than life in prison. Once you're sentenced to death, there is an automatic appeal process which takes a long time, and a lot of money, plus keeping them in prison. The cost per inmate for a lifer is less.

Moussouisiisiousisouimississippi wanted to be killed, that way he could be a martyr. He lied to the judge and jury heavily in attempt to gain that verdict. Unfortunately for him, the judge and jury saw right through that and gave him exactly what he didn't want- life in prison.

Catholic priests molest young boys and then are protected by the church, worse same or better? I personally reject all organized religion, but in so much as it does exist, none is worse than any other. It is how they are mis-used by people that is the problem. Crusades anyone?

I agree, the life sentance is better punishment. They should see to it that it is as uncomfortable as possible, and as long as possible. Will it cost me tax dollars? Yes, which I will gladly pay in his case.
