I agree that a DJ must above all else play to the crowd. Essentially the crowd pay to see the DJ and be entertained, they don't pay to hear the DJ do what he wants.

I also agree that he will be the #1 criticised DJ because he sets the standards and is a legend in the scene.

Just because he has umpteen tracks uploaded 24/7 does not mean they will be good enough to play out though. I will go out on a limb here and say the overall quality and quantity of killer tracks has reduced in the past 5 years. Way too much filler out there, not enough memorable tunes.

BTW I still occasionally enjoy tribal, but in a country where the majority of parties follow this sound, it?s easy to get tired of it.

Dig deeper man, there is more fucking quality shit out there now than there has been in years, although I agree there is a lot of blah out there (but it's a proportionate to the amount of stuff coming out I think)

I agree with you poto. Some of the classic tracks that we all love are hard to replace but I think that there is sooo much music and also many different types of genres out these days that it is almost impossible to even scratch the surface of the music industry. Im not a dj so I don't spend hours searching the net or record shops for the new tracks but I download so many live sets that unless the first time I listen to something it completely blows me away, it could be months before I listen to it again if I ever do listen again. I can be at a club and hear a track and think to myself "i know this track, what mix is this on?" and i never find it. There are loads of GREAT music out today so I can't really believe that the quality of good music has been reduced from a few years ago.

I stand by what I said earlier guys. I too listen to a ton of sets a week and the music doesnt grab me like it used to - I give most sets a listen at least twice so I can get used to the tracks, but even then I will say that sets from years ago had more quality tracks on.

For instance, just look at the tracklists from Digweeds first ever kiss fm shows in 2000 - pretty much every track is a classic, or is fondly remembered at least. Not so nowadays, the tracklists are a joke IMO.

I agree. I have said this many times, but I think for the most part the so-called big name DJs shovel crap these days. All the best mixes I hear, all the best tracks, the stuff I love, comes from "underground" guys.

Frisky Radio has done a huge job exposing me to these gems, huge propes to them.

I agree 90%, but Sasha has LOTS of tracks with him as they all fit nicely onto a hard drive

I was just going to post something about small hard drives these days, but maybe same shit happened like in Belgrade, Yugoslavia, where his Mac and/or Maven broke up, few hours before set, or thats what went out to the crowd. And just before the party he manages to record few CDs, so he can try to work things up.

I havent been there, but know some people who are his fans, went on a road trip of cca. 500km, to see this idiot. A friend havent spoke for 4 days, as mister big dj super star Sash/a totally utterly dissapointed him.

I myself am not going to allow myself to go to a party where he plays, heard him 3 times, two times totaly boring with no beginning nor end, and once with Mr. Digweed, where they both allmost destroyed the club (can say that this night was one of the best club nights i have ever been to in the last 9 years)

Sasha could have followed the easy and trusted path of adapting to the crowd, instead he played what he wanted and got booed for it. I believe in sticking to your guns, so more power to the guy, but Sasha, please, don?t ever play arena shows here anymore.

a djs job is to entertain the crowd, not be a self indulgent twat. for the record also i wouldn't say adapting to the crowd is the "easy path" to take, quite the opposite infact!! any chump can stand up and play his favorite records, the hard bit is choosing the right ones for that instant in time and space.

Nigel I kind of agree, but here?s the scenery : imagine you being booked to play a party where most of the other dj?s play tribal stuff, and that means only a fraction of the crowd came to see you. Are you going to start playing tribal too? Or are you going to try and respect those that did pay to see YOU? If Sasha had played a tribal set, I?d be the one who?d feel disgusted.

Ideally, you should try and find a middle ground. I think it?s beautiful when a dj brings a suspicious crowd to his side. I think a dj?s job is to entertain, but also to expose people to new music.

5 years ago you were 20 and i imagine/guessing you were just getting into the scene or had been there a year or two. Of course the music had a different feel then because it was all new and wonderful. everything is memorable when it's new. trust me, there's a ton of great music out there today but nothing can capture that "feeling" from when we first started listening/dj'ing etc.....

i would just like to say of how utterly sick i am of hearing anthems and classics. anthems and classics are for trancers. when i download a set, im hoping to hear tracks i;ve never heard before. i want to be exposed to new directions and new ways of thinking about the music. i'd rather not hear them play the same track as every other dj.

5 years ago I was 32, I wasn't just getting into the scene. I just think that people don't have to like what everyone else thinks is great at the moment....
