take 12 best college players, make them train for 2 months, and probably no one could beat you.. it was that way until 1988, when they almost lose against Russia. That way you'll tke a team to the olympics and not a bunch of individual talents.

you know i'm happy to see them lose too because there are some vemry arrogant players on that team.... BUT, in their defense, most of these teams that play olympic basketball i think play with each other all the time... where you have nba players that play against each other all the time and then you put a few on a team. i bet there's lots of chaos in trying to make a team cooperative that quickly... if its possible at all.

I`m sure the Argentinian players have league teams they play with too and have as much time to get together and train for tournaments as the US do. It`s the same over here when the English play football, yeh they lose often but they get as much time to prepare for international games as their opponents do.

We have a league here, but none of those players play there.
Most of them play in Spain, some in Italy, one in Greece, one in Russia, one finished his 2nd year with the Spurs (Ginobili) and 2 will play NBA this year (Nocioni and Delfino).
So they don't have many chances to train together during the seasons, but, most of them have been playing together year 2000, and the base of the team is the runner up on Indianapolis 2002 world cup.


On a different note. NBA's David Stern said this about the team

STERN believes the Men's National Team needs to spend more time as a team and play more frequently in international competitions to keep their edge over the rest of the world through their wealth of talent.



"The team needs to be on the road longer together so that the players can get used to each other and all of them to get accustomed to the international rules of basketball. We have a roster that at least 30 teams would want to have. I am not going to make any excuses on this team. We have stars in every position. We have a very good group of players here."



Some players did not come here and he feels some people have focussed instead on the commitment of those who have made the trip to Athens.



"They forget about Vince CARTER, Jason KIDD, Kevin GARNETT and they are focusing on LeBron JAMES, Tim DUNCAN, Lamar ODOM. This team is doing a pretty good job.



"There was a sense that the players that are here do not want to be here. This is so not true. In fact it is exactly the opposite. They volunteered. They are proud to represent their country. They deserve all our support."



There appears to be a hangover from when the 'Dream Team' ruled the roost yet while the team is good, the moniker is finished.



"Dream team, God bless it, was that and it is over. I still see it in all press clips. It is on consistent theme. We have a very good team with players like DUNCAN, (Allen) IVERSON, LeBron (JAMES), (Carmelo) ANTHONY and (Stephon) MARBURY."



European basketball has improved due to their players playing in the NBA but he hopes while he is in charge they do not overtake the USA.



"It is something that has started in the 90s. It is not something new. We remember (the McDonalds Championship in) Paris, or 1999 and the Spurs. Sometimes it was a close call. The world keeps sending us their best. Eventually we are going to lose. I just hope it is not in my watch."



When the USA professional players started playing international basketball the rules between FIBA and the NBA differed greatly, while there are still differences they are not as great.



"There have been a lot of changes. When we first got in touch with FIBA there were two 20-minutes parts in the game, there was a 30-second clock. We had to make some changes too. The best of the two worlds is coming together. We've got to check what is nest for Basketball."



Talent is not an issue for him, it is more about learning the basics.



"I do not think that we have a lack of talents. On the contrary. We?ve got to do a better job on teaching out youngsters the basics. That is a shared responsibility between the league, the coaches and the players themselves."
