why is everyone so sure about the GUs being mixed on protools? i mean i understand that it is probally used in the editing/mastering process, but it is not referenced in the booklets the way Nick Warren states about mixing on decks and a mixer. i just was wondering because everyone is always saying the cds are made with protools.

Re: Protools and GU
because a studio engineer usually does the mixing. i.e. john will go in with the tracks, play around and come up with a tracklist so speak, then the engineer loads it all up, and mixes the album via the comp?????your life is an occasion, rise to it.

Re: Protools and GU
if thats true, no wonder djs always thank Cheeky Paul Morris so much. I think that kinda ruins the idea of a mix cd to me. i understand being assisted in making a mix with a sound engineer, but how can you claim to mix a cd if you don't do it yourself. i mean these guys mix in clubs all the time, whats so hard about makin a cd. i have done it,live on decks, so why can't a big dj do it that way. i mean i don't care if someone uses protools to mix it, but do it yourself or put the sound engineers name of the cover. Its just a feeling....gonna take you higher....Comment

Re: Protools and GU
i never said it was, just wondering were the theroy/idea that protools was used in almost ALL of the GUs came from. i mean i expect Sasha,Digger, ect. to do thier own edits/remixes of tracks to suit their needs(thats a good and cool concept), but does that mean they had a studio engineer mix it for them? Its just a feeling....gonna take you higher....Comment

Re: Protools and GU
i would think the djs have ALOT of imput as to the actual mixing of the tracks. the studio engineers just do what they're told. hence why any sasha or digweed gu is mixed about 1000x better than a deep dish gu.Comment

Re: Protools and GU
^^^^^^^ my point exactly. i mean listening to say Diggers or Danny Howells mixes, they sound alot more mixed and layered then say GU29 does(i do like disc 1, so don't jump down my throat).Example, GU14 sounds more mixed by Diggers then GU29 does(which we know for fact is mixed on ableton) by Sharam. I heard they on the GU board that they mix and then edit or whatever the tracks one at time using a deck and protools together. i know someone who does something like this. Its just a feeling....gonna take you higher....Comment

Re: Protools and GU
Not all mixed cd's are done this way. But I understand what you're saying. It should become more clear to the buyer/listener how it was created. Doesn't have to be advertised, but should be found somewhere in the booklet (unless it is and I'm blind).if thats true, no wonder djs always thank Cheeky Paul Morris so much.

Re: Protools and GU
If that's the case (DJs mixing each GU on decks), I'd expect each GU to be a live recording of the GU party in whichever city the release was based, which is never the case.

Re: Protools and GU
the whole ibiza was so intricate with it's mixing that i doubt it could ever be reproduced with two soundsources and a mixer.Comment

Re: Protools and GU
But with mixes like Alive and Utilities, its proof that a DJ can release high quality live mixes. I don't have a problem with protools, but I still think it should be stated deep within the booklet somewhere. Not so you can say "oh, this is just protools" but so you know what you're listening to... it would only lead to greater appreciation.Comment

Re: Protools and GU
GU are a bit inconsistent. I had a quick look through my collection and they say things like:
"This release was mastered directly from vinyl at the request of the DJ?" - GU 007
"Compiled and mixed by John Digweed." - GU 006
"Compiled and mixed by Sasha."..."All mixing done exclusively on the DJ 2000." - GU 009
Sasha also thanks Johnathan Ive from Apple Computer, which I find interesting. I wonder what the head designer at Apple had to do with GU 009.
"Compiled and mixed by Nick Warren using two Technics 1210 and Pioneer cd500s and a Pioneer dj500 mixer." - GU 011
"Additional Pro Tools by Ben Georgiades - Sphere Studios." - GU 023
"Compiled, mixed, edited and tweaked by (Deep Dish)...on Pioneer equipment." - GU025
My guess is that the production varies from CD to CD depending on the DJ but that all of them pass through ProTools (or now Abelton) at some stage for tweaking.Comment
