i don't see blink 182 or ashley simpson thanking their sound engineers for the mastering and editing they do on their cds... maybe inside the cover. just give the SE credit somewhere and be done with it. like DNF said, those guys just do what they are told. it is still the artist choosing what to do when.

I've looked through GU019, and couldn't see a mention for anything.

I looked through GU027 and this is what it says:

"CD2 of this mix is what Danny played in the main room at Space in the early hours of Sunday morning, and CD1 is what he played out on the Terrace when the sun had come up."

Do they mean that literally, or do they mean it's the "type" of shit he played?

kinda wondered that too, actually. do they play these in the club, then come back and just recreate the set in a studio? some shit is unbelievable if they do it live, but i wouldn't put it past our heroes to be capable of doing it.

I always thought the concept of GU was after touring a city or whatever, the artist would put a mix together based around the tunes they were playing during the tour. One's that stood out for them or inspired them. I didn't think they recorded a set from one of the nights and remastered it. It kinda looks like they might just do "whatever". Anyway, GU is shit now. They need some fresh artists doing it.

i thought that was right too. i am quite sure they are all "based" on the night they played. and its up to the DJ to choose how its mixed. personally i dont give a fuck how its mixed. as long as it sounds good. any of these dj's can mix, its not that hard. its hard to make it sound perfect. but i buy a mix cd for the music, not cause someone can hold the pitch for 3.5 mins. however its done tho, they should give credit where credit is due. if i were doing it in protools i would do it my fuckin self. not give cheeky paul a stack of tracks to mix (not that, it happens that way... i have no clue how it works), but i would do the work myself... only fair...

i hate to say this but GU has been really stagnate as of recent years. If they are using the same artists and producers ... no wonders each "new" cd sounds the same. I always thought they were "live" cd's. But it is almost impossible to get that kinda of technical mixing.

I believe the protools is the part of the downmix process. I would hate to believe that is their put together product. Interesting topic none.the.less.

there is NO WAY Deep Dish mixed a cd using just tables and a mixer...those guys are not that good at the technical side of dj'ing.

on their toronto disc, they each took as many tries as necessary to nail the mixes. its apparently very easy to do.

I remember reading an interview with digweed where he stated that his LA cd was not recorded live (if anyone had any doubts) and neither was his Hong Kong disc, but they were both very close to what he did play. I think he said that some of the tracks had to be changed due to liscensing issues.

I figured that they thanked their engineers because they were the ones who mastered the disc after they recorded it on to the computer (into protools or whatever). Just because protools what used at the last step doesn't mean that they didn't mix it 'live' in the studio.

I didn't hear any reason why the Ibiza discs couldn't have been done live...

ibiza discs were definitely not done live. read an interview with sasha where he said the mix from Stage One into Sacred would have not been possible without protools...no beat for far too long for a normal mix.

^^^yepper. hell try out some of the mixes Seaman did on his Melbourne cd. He even said that without protools a bunch of those mixes would have been incredibly hard to do.

i was definetly aware GU22 was protooled, amongst other tools used. he makes comments about doing things in the studio that would be hard or impossible to do live. thats ok though, becuse he basically PRODUCED the album, i think thats a cool concept too, as long as you do it with the intention of not acting like you are some superhuman mix artist that can do things that are impossible to do with out programs, ect.

Call yourself avid music fans? If you can't tell which albums in the Gu series have been tweaked or pro-tooled then you need to have a word with yourselves IMO.

For instance, GU11 by Warren is clearly a live mix in that he literally played that set in a studio, recorded it and released it. He may have practised it a bunch of times beforehand, but the version released was live. Some of the mixes are off, slightly out, but it's still a 'classic' GU.

yeah, GU 11 is a classic mix, nice & bangin. and yes you can tell he did it live, which is totally cool IMO. i mean it almost doesn't matter,depending on what the dj was trying to acomplish(ie. making a "regular mix" or doing something like GU24 or GU22 with alot of layering and additional production).if you are Sharam,for example, and you make GU29 with ableton, thats fine, but it is just track to track transitions(poorly at that), not this total remix/changing of tracks(like GU24 or Involver) album you make.
