my computer is making noises

my 5 year old iBook is dying, i think.
likes to freeze up at random times, the hard drive goes click click click over and over like its stuck, and today it was making sounds like tearing a piece of paper up.

i completely erased the HD over thanksgiving and did a fresh install but its still doing this. any ideas? replace just the HD or the whole thing?

Your HD is on its last legs.

The rest of your machine is still ok though i bet.

thanks, looks like i can get a new one for about $100 and have my dad put it in.
its funny, it still reboots after it freezes with no problems and i havent lost any data yet

also check the coolers. could be a problem with the temperature

Definitely sounds like a dying hard drive. I had an IBM Deskstar (AKA Deathstar) that did the same things right before it died. With all my data on it.
