BRITISH pop star Robbie Williams will be fined $300 for lighting up during his Brisbane gigs, but Premier Peter Beattie has offered to cough up for it because he wants to look cool.
While Mr Beattie said today that the singer would be "treated like anybody else" and fined $300, he also said he would pay the fines himself because Williams had been a guest of Queensland and he was concerned at being labelled a stick-in-the-mud.
"He is an entertainer,'' he said.
"He used it as part of his act and he is going to be treated like anybody else, but because of the circumstances, I am going to pay it.''
Williams was criticised by health groups for smoking a cigarette in front of more than 50,000 fans at his opening Brisbane concert at Suncorp Stadium on Wednesday night.
And he lit up again at last night's concert.
The Queensland Cancer Fund has labelled Williams, 32, a "very bad boy'', while a spokesman for Health Minister Stephen Robertson said he was sending the wrong message to kids.
Williams told fans he knew the venue was non-smoking but couldn't give up the bad habit and it was his only vice after giving up drugs and alcohol.
During last night's concert Williams told the crowd he had heard about the controversy but he said he was not a role model.
Instead he sarcastically praised Australian cricketing "role model" Shane Warne for his clean-living lifestyle, which drew a loud call of "Warney'' from the stands.
Suncorp Stadium spokesman Greg Adermann said the stadium managers had yesterday complied with a request from the Health Department to remind the British superstar the venue was non-smoking.
"We did what the Department of Health did ask us to do, to remind him it was a non-smoking venue, and that you are not allowed to smoke but did anyway,'' Mr Adermann said.
Meanwhile, 17 neighbours of the Milton stadium last night complained about noise and traffic but Mr Adermann said several callers had asked for the music to be turned up.
