i personsally don't like it at all..i think most of it sounds like a video game. it has it's place, (warm-up sets i would think) but this past year i've just tried to occupy my time with sets from luke fair, desyn, and jody wisternoff. i just love the driving basslines and melodies that these guys tend to play. i was pretty dissapointed in a lot of sasha, digweed, zabiela, fanciulli sets this past year. it's just my two cents but the bottom line is there is more than enough music/dj's to listen to to please your ear, it doesnt have to come from the top 10 dj's in the world, look at tracklists and download stuff that you like.

Do you think someone like Bodzin is in the top echelon of DJs (not production) for the sound he plays? Who do you rank at the top of that game?

I saw Bodzin live last December and didn?t like him at all. Because he mostly played his own stuff and that, to me, became boring after his 1st two records. He started full throttle, left me completely floored for the 1st 15/20 minutes but then...nothing happened...just the same pace throughout the whole set (about 2 hours), no rollercoaster ride, nothing...

I dunno man, what would you call minimal anyway? For example, my favorite track from 2006 was Martin Buttrich?s "Full Clip", some people would call that minimal but I completetly disagree.

For what I consider minimal, I?d say Hawtin, Villalobos, Luciano, Troy Pierce, Magda and Marc Houle are the best I?ve seen yet.

Not quite as minimal, but still amazing were Gui Boratto, RadioSlave , LocoDice (both Dice and RadioSlave are much better DJ?s than producers IMO), Ellen Allien, Extrawelt and Gabriel Ananda.

This is just speaking about the onees I?ve seen, I?m sure there are many others.

hoenstly i am sure i will get blasted, but minimal sounds are the worst sound for me.
the best sounds are from what i hear from most argentinan djs. thats where its at imo.

Me too. Interestingly the minimal that I have liked is Barem, another argentinian. I find minimal pleasant and sort of jazzy . But I really love to dance and this doesn't make me want to dance. Lacking in passion imho.

I wouldn't consider Stephan Bodzin to be in the top echelon. I will say that his October 06 promo mix did turn out quite well, though - that one flows quite well for me and rocks it out. No other mix I've heard from him has approached that level.

As I thought more about it, I realized that answering this is a bit tricky...minimal mixes do tend to be more hit and miss for me, particularly with a lot of the usual suspects like Villalobos, Troy Pierce, etc... I actually think that a good chunk of criticism about minimal is true; it carries many pitfalls with it in regards to how to structure a mix, and many DJs tend to fall into those pitfalls. And it does ultimately get back to melody and progression. There is such a thing for me as too minimal. I came up through deep house and progressive, and I think spinning minimal is trickier in terms of flow.

But when it's on, it's really on...really good minimal/tech stuff really speaks to me on almost an intuitive, philosophical level not just in terms of a full on rave or something like that. For every one of Richie's sets that are just ok for me, I've heard him do some really amazing stuff too. I also get a lot of enjoyment out of looking through the productions out there (some great stuff being produced out there) and making my own stuff.

Lars Fischer
Jorge Savoretti
Barem
Minilogue
Pig & Dan
Mathew Jonson (particularly live - life altering experience)
Pheek (when I'm really in more of a minimal mood...)
Hawtin as well, for the most part...

I saw Hawtin years ago in 01 and he was amazing, better than Lawler, was glad to leave the tent!

i am happy with where music is at these days.

Me too. I think that the music is stronger than it has been for a few years, and i like the direction that it is going. Listen closely to the production in some of the tracks that are floating around these days, and you will notice the complexity of them..There are some quality minimal tracks floating around and I'm loving it

I know that, that?s why I said he?s better as a DJ than a producer.

Martin is a genius, though. I like what he did under his own name more than what he did for Loco Dice. His stuff for Timo Maas is different, but still good for what it is.
