The human body is quite the best piece of engineered machine in the world!... National Geographic had a series on the "human machine" a couple weeks ago on HD.. pretty fucking awesome...

Wow, I certainly understand what your saying, probably the most shocking aspect of my experience was that clearly the students were new at this, and that being said, the place wasnt as clean as one might assume it should/would be.?? any idea why??

I'm a first year med student and we just wrapped up anatomy. It was a crazy experience. The first day of lab these corpses are laying and you can't help but wonder if it "hurts" when you are cutting into them. But the nerves fade quick and are shortly replaced by a sense of awe. I think every table reenacted the indian jones scene when the heart is held up though. It was all very surreal at times but probably the most interesting thing I have done to date.

P.S. I would always go into lab on my own when no one was there and set up my little portable speakers and blast a little S&D for all the stiffs to hear.

Its just impossible to keep clean. Mostly becuase of the fat. The fat in the body gets everywhere and there is loads of it. The floor gets slick with it if you don't mop daily. And fluids leak out all over the place. its really quite gross if you are not expectings it. You have to soak the bodies in wetting solution constantly to keep them from drying up, but when you go to flip the bodies the liqud that has pooled in various nooks and cranies and crevaces comes gushing.

If you want another visual, they made us practice prostate and vaginal exams on our cadavers.

I'm at Jefferson Medical College in Philadelphia. The plan is to go into emergency medicine and subspecialize in tactical emergency med. Ideally, i want to work in an ER but then moonlight as a SWAT team doctor or the like. You are certified law enforcement, go on all the callouts and raids, trained in weapons and tacticts etc, but are also trained in "the best medcine in the worst places".

Right on, I got 1 more year but i'll be going over to the carib. I hear ER residency spots are tough these days, at least at the major university programs. I'm hoping to do ent, neurosurg, gen surg w/ subspec in cardiothoracics, or some sort of IM, probably neuro. The SWAT thing sounds badass and I contemplated sports medicine or aerospace medicine.

has anyone else been to the bodies exhibit? We have one here in San Diego, I haven't been yet and now I'm not sure I need to or will...thoughts?

I've visited the exhibition, it's amazing!
Too bad I only had 90 mins to visit the entire place, I had to leave for lunch with some friends.
Some friends spent 4 hours, checking every body, listening the explanations given by med students

I saw it in Vegas over Labor Day. really cool exhibit, highly recommended. You kinda get a bit numb to it after a while, but I thought it was more fascinating than gross.
