More CD copy protection stuff

This relates to the new Beastie Boys CD but I thought id deserved a seperate post since you might start seeing this from other artists.

Like turning off the autoplay feature for your cd drive in windows? Things just don't automatically happen unless you want them too.

Still a very shady move in the record companies part. I wonder if the antivirus people will protect your computer from it seeing how that would kinda be like some of these nasty trojan horse virii runing around.

I can't really see how this is allowed... Seems like pretty illeagal activity to me on the record companies part.. They must have some sort of wording on the cd packet saying that by opening the cd you allow said record company to install whatever the hell they like on your computer. Otherwise I'd say they'll be in serious trouble with this.

These record companies will never learn... they're harming their own image faster than anyone else can do for them!

Seriously. Every time I buy a CD I actually feel like I'm helping to further the machine. Every time they pull some crap like this, it makes me want to next time just download the stupid thing, just to take my share out of their profits even though I know it isn't fair to the artist.

Use a firewall ... It will ask you if you want to install anything ... Set it up to paranoic mode and it won`t let you get online ( reason - It`s a real junge out there )

I agree with the software firewall. No wonder it took so long for them to release their album. The had to protect their assets.

Just to clarify, here's the deal with the copy protection on the CD:

a) The copy protection is in all territories except the US and UK -- US and UK discs do not have this protection on them;

b) All EMI CDs are treated this way, TT5B isn't protected in any special way;

c) Beastie Boys would have preferred not to have the copy protection, but weren't allowed to go against EMI policy in these territories.

Disabling cd-autoplay, pressing the shift key when you insert the cd will be enopugh to skip the cd-protection installation. After that, looks like it's easy to rip it on winamp or other softwares.

Oh, and older cd-players might not be able to play it...
