You can get a FireWire800 enclosure for any hard drive. Don't be stuck with just Maxtor. C'mon now.

Why would you buy an enclosure from Fry's? They have the worst prices for enclosures.

i've got a 320Gb Western Digital jobbie!

works a treat, but a bit on the bulky side and it needs to be plugged into the wall for juice.

apparently u can get selfed power 320gb drives now that are a lot smaller.

Yes. The 2.5" laptop drives can just be plugged into your system and won't need additional power.

i am thinking either get a Western one or Maxtor. Which is a better name and model. i don't care bout plugging it into the wall as long as by plugging it into the wall it won't heat up more.

WD have been producing decent hdds recently, I'd go with them. The Maxtor external hdd is a fugly brick anyway, I know, it's sitting right next to my notebook right now. Good thing it isn't mine, just dumping gigs of music into it for my friend.

Just bought the WD 500 gig one. Copying some files onto it now. Since this is my first one is there anything i should be careful of ? EG not moving too many files at one time or anything else. Thanks guy's its nice and compact. and no noise (so far anyway).

oh and i got it for $189 Australian dollars. which i think is quiet cheap. I thought it would cost me like $300-400. so thats nice to know how cheap they are. once this is packed full which won't take long will get another one. depends if it gives me trouble or not.

You are good to go with it. If at some point you want to connect it to a Mac, then the drive has to be formatted in FAT32 (which it should be by default).
