Whenever I'm uploading something such as in Soulseek, BitTorrent or during any other file transfer, it slows down my connection HORRIBLY to dialup-like speeds. I've been playing around with opening ports and such, but it really hasn't helped at all. So I would like to know what the hell I can do to fix this so that it doesn't slow down my connection whenever I upload. I have SBC DSL with a 2Wire HomePortal100 Router.

Whoever can help me get rid of this problem gets ALL my karma. :wink:

no solution, buddy. the more upstream you consume the more your downstream suffers. i don't know the complete technical reasons for it, but i always figured it's because less room for request packets being sent out = less received packets.

MJ, Sorry to fill you in on your frustrations but this as sucky as it can get. Corporate America is making millions of off unknowing people who are orgasming on the speeds of cable compared to dial-up but people in the know using bandwidth and what computers are capable of are the ones left back holding the barf bags from the speeding nausea that the un-initiated have left back.

Problem with cable is that you are on a "SHARED" connection. You are not directly fed with the bandwidth you are paying for i.e. dedicated connection. Cable sucks on all accounts (unless you live in a region which is migrating to digital) and bandwidth drops like a hot knife through butter when people are merely watching tv. More people watch tv, faster is that knife gonna drop.

But cable (and their ISP's) dont end their with their cock-knocking. Because of the shared aspect of your connection, you cap out at a realistic 90 kbps while the installation guy fed you a bucket of diarrhea stating you had signed up for 756 down and 128 up. Only in God's country is that true and since both you and me are miles from it, we're stuck with literally at 1/8th of the stated limitation.

But wait, cable still hasn't shown you the might, "I'm Not done taking your money yet" trick. Mind you, because it's shared, it doesn't mean you are going to download at 90 kbps and upload at 16 at the same time. It simply means that you are going to either download at 90 or upload at 16. YOU CANNOT HAVE YOUR PIE AND EAT IT TOO BUDDY!!!!

So as uploads creep into the downloads turf, you're left behind holding barf bags due to the speeding phenomena thinking, maybe someone on [ms] has an answer ?? You know, you just got it

He's got DSL, which sucks, but for different reasons, it's just not a shared connection beyond the other people on your LAN.

you can cap your upload rate on Bit torrent it really helps

I was refering to the latter my friend, you'd have to be crawling out of the sticks to get stuck with 768 kbps. But oh well I'll be more careful next time :wink:

i was going to get dsl and they(SBC) told me that my speed would depend on how far or close i was to some origin point. the closer i was to that point the faster my connection.

i was supposedly far away(in the middle of houston) and told me the speed wouldn't be that great, so i got cable instead.

s'what sucks about DSL...in my case I'm too far away so I HAVE to get cable...

on the flipside though, I have a nice large/"master" box on the property to which the tech when installing the phone line (new property) said it could now serve as another "office" which they are slowly doing (to expand better and get people who normally couldn't get it as is)...but I haven't been able to convince any "sales" (loosely termed) people over there to get someone over here to check it out and see if it can be...otherwise I'd sign up in a heartbeat since the speed's about the same and the prices are a LOT less...

-E-, yes it sucks, but I'd rather have it done up that way, then have the speeds fly in most cases, but get capped on bandwidth limits/month like they have overseas...the companies may "rape" the consumer, but they DO allow (basic) unlimited bandwidth usage (within plausible reasons; 80GB a month is NOT unlimited )..could they change it? sure. will they? hell no

back to the topic at hand...yes, any uploads eat into your downloads, so you gotta cap the u/l speeds, or don't download :wink:

If you have a broadband connection, either DSL or cable, chances are there's a few things you could do to optimize its speed. Windows XP uses a variety of registry settings to control how fast data is passed to and from network interfaces, so tweaking these settings to more accurately reflect the capabilities of your connection is a good idea. As there are a number of rather esoteric locations in the registry that need to be changed in order to tweak your connection's speed, refer instead to the selection of registry files here to automatically set the correct values for your system.

Gotta correct you here- people watching TV is not going to affect your cable internet bandwidth. Frequency spectrums are reserved for particular uses. Much like DSL services you have different freqs reserved for different uses (DSL has 1 for upstream, 1 for downstream and 1 for POTS).

'They' are screwing us but not they way you currently believe. Just ask anyone who had @home service (8mb service) before AT&T bought it out, and now Comcast. Its also been said that the HFC can deliver a lot more bandwidth very easily but I suspect the reason we don't get ~34mb service which the current DOCSIS standard allows for is because of the cost of bandwidth to the ISP at the backbone level.

BTW ever heard of people uncapping their cable modems? We could all be running almost 40mb without a problem but just think what that would cost your ISP connecting to the backbone

,,,obviously, i'm not getting 1mbps up, but its DAMN good. between other extreme cable users, we get like 250k per second. cant beat that with a stick, especially for the price.
