VirusScan updates

My copy of McAfee Virus Scan has just run out of free updates and is trying to charge me ?35 for the next year - this confuses me cos I spent ?17 on it for a boxed version from PC world with a years free updates! I've just checked their website and it's still at that price - if anything I would expect the subscription to be cheaper than the boxed version, but certainly not twice the price!!

What's the deal? Should I just buy the boxed copy again?

hmmmmm....sounds like a good deal...but i had the same thing happen to me about two years ago....they ripped me off so i dumped them and went with Norton...been happy ever since..

One day I called my cable company...

• Them: "Hi, who am I speaking with?"
  Me: "I just have a quick question. I'm moving to a new house and you guys have a "sign up now and get the first 3 months half price" deal going right now. Instead of cancelling my service, and having my roommate re-sign up with the discounted rate, can you just give me the discount at the new place?"

  Me: "Well I don't want to give you my name if you aren't going to help me."
  Them: "I'm sorry sir, but I can't help you because you aren't cooperating with me."
  Me: "bull, I'm not giving you my name so you can edit my account good or bad, unless you want to help me out"
  Them: "Goodbye sir."

I recommend just buying the new one and forget about the old one. Businesses are weird.

mcafee sucks...they screwed me around too. their instant updater is messed up, and they always seem to be trying to sell you something else. switch to norton.

This might seems like a pain in the azz....but if you do a fresh install of the OS, you'll get a years worth of updates...again. Of course, you need to re-install the anti viri warez.

They put some shiiiite in the registy to keep track of when it went "live."

At least Norton does....

^ ...then just remove the shit from the registry. I doubt this is the case though. They probably connect to the update server and send the install date to the server to prevent people from just removing it from the registry/clean install. Anything that deals with the accounts on the Internet usually does, it seems like.

Cheers guys, I'll check out AVG. Don't wanna switch to norton, I've used it before and found it more intrusive than McAfee - maybe that's changed now but I've had no problems with McAfee until now.

I've just reinstalled the OS (or reimaged it anyway) and it doesn't start the year all over again. Thnik I'll just go and buy the boxed edition again

I don't understand why they offer that for free though - the only disadgantage is having to do a manual download every week or so! Not complaining though!
