New Orleans - Trip planned - Looking for help

Looking for some help... The lady and I are heading to New Orleans for Halloween to see one of her college friends. We have never been and I am looking for any advice on what we should not skip on our trip. We leave for N.O. on the October 29 (Thursday) and get in at 11pm, and leave Sunday 11/1 at 12pm.

The guy were are going to see has been there for 1-2 years. I am sure he has a few spots, however, we don't always agree on the same fun scale... Where would you rec. that we eat? Any good places to hear some good tunes? Any local bars not to miss out on?

Halloween on frenchman street is good i hear. We are going to see rotary downs at a cool bar called d.b.a. Check them out on their myspace page

yea, the frenchman area is cool. there's d.b.a. and several other places in the area that will have great music. snug harbor, check point charlies, the blue nile are all there in the frenchman st. area as well as d.b.a.

go to central grocery on decatur and get a muffuletta!

other places are the maple leaf on oak st. which always has great music. right next door is an incredible place to eat called jacques-imo's.

that's the wknd of voodoo fest so there's tons going on around the city music wise other than the festival itself.

a cool hole in the wall bar is miss mae's on magazine. you can literally walk in with $ 10 and stumble out with money in your pocket, and it's open 24hrs.

a cool place that garreth, clint, and myself hang out at is st. joes on magazine.

check out cooter brown's on the corner of st. charles and carrollton ave. huge selection of beers and great bar food.

port o calls on esplanade has by far the best burgers in the city and stout drinks kinda goes without saying in nola.

you should go to the abita brewery tour on the north shore in abita springs. it's about a 45 min drive but worth it. drink free the whole tour then leave there ( they have about all their beers on tap ) and then drive down the road to the abita brew pub. incredible food and more beer. tours are saturdays at 11, 12, and 1. go to the 11 oclock tour bc there's less of a croud so you don't have to wait in line as much for refills.

this is just off the top of my head. i'll pm you my number in case you need something or want to meet us fellow ms'ers. unfortunately the next movie i'm about to start will have me working tues thru sat. so i woun't be able to go to voodoo fest or do anything until sat nite.

i'll try to think of some more things. so many incredible places to eat, drink, and hear music.
there may be some type of edm event at the dragon's den which is right there near all the frenchman places. it'll be locals im sure.

other bars are the bulldog on magazine and molly in the marigny. i can't think of the st molly's is on at the moment.

also, lucy's retired surfers bar

go eat at deanies in bucktown and order the bbq'ed shrimp

also, get a ferdie poboy at mother's

if you are intown on the thursday night go to see kermit ruffins at vaughns. Probably the one of the most enjoyable nights you can have in NOLA

Johnny, hit up Port of Call on Esplande for a big nasty hamburger, potato and a monsoon that'll get you toasty off one. I like this touristy place on Poydras and Tchoupitoulas (<- try saying that) called Mother's. Rockin' jambalaya and poboys. Another good place on Tchop is Couchons, really good southern style food at reasonable prices. There are a ton of places to eat really, all kinds of "hole in the wall" joints.

As far as music, NOLA is famous for jazz/blues and you'll find it all over the place. The dance music scene is kinda small but it's out there if you look hard enough. That weekend MSTRKRFT (if you fancy those guys) is playing on the 29th at Ampersand on Tulane. You could always go to Voodoo Fest and see a line of crap including Tiesto.

wow clint, it's like you read my mind, or maybe didn't read my post! and don't group all of voodoo fest in with tiesto just b/c you don't listen to anything but the techner. there's lots of various types of music there. plenty of new orleans icons in blues and jazz. i even think fischerspooner is playing.
