I don't know anything about Morrissey. What is the big deal about why he is so awesome and what should I check out? Do some of us USA people miss out on his greatness because we aren't English? No offense but this is just an observation on someone I should know more about but don't. I think this is a good thread for this type of confession.
So what's the big deal about <artist>? Educate me.

So I think this is a good thread to ask about artists which we don't know much about, and also what to check out, and why we should.

Haha, I have had recent conversations about Morrissey actually that's funny you should bring it up Res... a lot of my friends were big fans while in middle school/high school, I never gave them a try though.
It was fun while it lasted...

Just his constant depressions and his solo work mostly compiling of songs of being rejected.
"One would get the impression listening to your songs that you haven't had a very happy love life," I observed. "I haven't had any love life," said Morrissey with one of those uncertain laughs. "Yeah, it's been quite ridiculous, and it's something I'm asked to cover quite a lot in interviews, and people who don't like me always get the impression that I just constantly sit and moan for hours on end - but it's quite difficult when you're asked these questions and if you want to give honest replies, which I always want to do, then I have to say yes, I'm quite miserable. So why am I laughing?"

Re: So what's the big deal about <artist>? Educate me.
Perhaps. He does have something of the old English eccentric about him. I think a lot of his appeal in his early days was the fact he was such an anti-hero if you like. After years of pop artists of the likes of Abba and Michael Jackson etc etc this guy seemed more real, he seemed more like one of your mates who got lucky than a mega star from some misty land on tele.
He's still doing his thing now and being an awkward, miserable bastard at times - maybe that's the part people in other countries don't get so much?
We love awkward, miserable bastards here you see.
The Smiths were a fucking great great band. If you find it miserable then you've probably missed some of the point if not the whole point but each to their own etc etc

You learn something new every day

That actually makes a lot of sense Bob
By the same token (let me ask you) do some people then pretend to be an awkward, miserable bastard because they think it's cool?
