Saw robert Babicz the other week and he played a track of dubstep/trap sounds....first hour was meh, second better apart from the trapstep and some meh tracks..third was rocking.

Dark flower was played twice, Melbourne had it played 3 times in various forms apparently.

Saw Dj Krush last year at unit and he played a banging techno set...seriously. I thought it was good, took my japanese friend by surprise though.

Fergie (not the black eyed peas one ffs) has gone from hadd house don to techno, to a minimal sound, to techno again and now it seems big room nu-skool prog sound.

Paul oakenfold now plays that similar cheesy sound...

Just some examples of how people's tastes change over time...is it $$$ related?

A local producer who had a track appear on a gu compilation told me that there is no money in prog...the traditional form that is...he is making that big room nu skool sound.

I'm not really sure what the term Change It Up means, but if your talking about changing what they play its fairly common for music tastes evolve. I suppose the best example of this is The Beatles, they went from cheesy records like Love Me Do to Sargent Peppers in just a few years. As far as DJ's go a lot don't want to be playing the same music they were playing 5 years ago. Although I'm sure many are playing what they think people will like just to carry on making money just because they couldn't match their earnings in the real world of working.

You just have to look at Sasha I think the only proper job he had was working in a Call Center, which is a fate I wouldn't wish on anyone.

A lot of artists get paid buttons if at all, and some don't readily see the money from compilations.

The money from production is in owning the music e.g. if it gets picked up for film / tv /ads etc. Doing the production gets you profile, which in turn, get you gigs which is where the real money is.

If you then get your own label your profile gets higher and your network bigger, if the label can use its name to be used for a night at clubs even better.

Fair play to Babicz .. great productions and nice to see him getting the gigs. The first to admit he's not a DJ, he's more of a 'live' act playing his own productions - but he's a genius with some stuff. I remember his gear breaking down before a gig and he ended up re-synching everything incl. playing synths via his i-pad to ensure the show went on.

Dark Flower played 2 or 3 times isn't a bad thing

I think many of the best artists re-invent themselves several times throughout their careers. I don't fault anyone for following their artistic will, whatever it may be. The freedom to express ones self as they choose is what it's all about. I say good on any dj who does what they want. That includes TRYING something new for the sake of... well, trying something new. If they are a failure at it, so what, if they succeed, so what. It's all about doing whatever the fuck you want, that inspires you and feeds your soul anyway.

But seriously I think it makes me appreciate the fact more that some producers consistently churn out decent tunes over time...oakenfold and Fergie and their fans could well argue that our sounds we are into are boring/dull...they're wrong obviously (jokes)
